My Approach to Helping
The safe harbor of the therapeutic relationship offers a chance for validation, honesty, acceptance, and change that is not always possible in other relationships Whether you seek support navigating a difficult life transition, managing or confronting difficult emotions, sorting out feelings about a relationship, understanding the effects of a painful past, or exploring ambivalence and fear of change, the therapeutic relationship can help you get "un-stuck" and moving forward.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
*Managing anger, fear, grief, shame and other strong emotions
*Anxiety and depression
*Managing the symptoms and triggers of relational trauma/PTSD (intense anxiety and hypervigilance, lost sense of self, dissociation, avoidance, shame, emotional numbing, chronic pain, etc.)
*Family issues (separation, divorce, death, addiction, mental illness) and their effects on individual family members
*Strategies and coping skills for adolescents and adults with ADHD
My Role as a Therapist
I've found most of my clients to be remarkably intuitive, insightful, and wise. Sometimes, due to the challenges of life and demands of relationships, people lose touch with their sense of self, their ability to trust their own instincts and their belief in their right to have their needs met. By providing clarity, coaching, education and support, a therapist can help guide you back to your Self so that you can once again listen to your inner wisdom, trust your instincts and find a balance between your needs and the needs of others.
Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work
I use a collaborative and relation-based approach, which acknowledges our need for connection to others, as well as the role early experiences play in our current relationship patterns.
I draw upon principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Attachment Theory, Internal Family Systems, Bowen Family Systems and Stage-Based trauma treatment. I approach each client with an individually tailored treatment plan designed to meet his or her individual goals and needs.
