I believe that you are already the expert on you and that you have the power within you to make positive changes in your life. My job is to help you look for what is holding you back in life and what you can do to make the changes necessary to lead the life that you want to live. One of the most useful things you can learn in therapy is how to take good care of yourself. This comes in the form of learning healthy coping skills such as self-care, setting boundaries, and effective communication. Often we feel overwhelmed by life's problems and know what we want our life to look like, but have fewer ideas about how to get there. Together we will set goals to help you create your best life and make a realistic plan to help you achieve those life goals. I believe that the better you understand yourself, the more power you have to live the life you want to live. Therapy is a unique opportunity to explore who you are and what you want for yourself in a safe, healing environment. It's time to let go of the behaviors that might feel comfortable or familiar but ultimately harm us more and more over time (using drugs, drinking alcohol excessively, bouncing from one unhealthy relationship to the next, etc.) and to learn the skills that will actually help you overcome life's struggles and lead to peace and wellbeing.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I specialize, in particular, in working with clients who are struggling either with their own substance abuse or with that of a loved one. If you are considering whether your use of substances is harmful or excessive, or if you have completed substance use treatment and are looking to continue in individual therapy, I have significant experience working with treatment facilities and can provide excellent aftercare to support you. I have a working relationship with many recovery resources in the area and can help you get plugged in.
If you have a loved one who is struggling with an addiction and you yourself are struggling to understand, set boundaries, or provide support without enabling, we explore the ways that your life has been affected by your loved one's addiction and what you can do to protect your own well-being while loving this person with appropriate boundaries in place.
What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process
Often I find that people are fearful of therapy for two reasons: what others will think of me if they find out I'm in therapy, or what my therapist will think of me if I am honest with him/her. The bottom line here is that fear holds us back from asking for help when we are overwhelmed. The secret is: we ALL need help from time to time. We are human beings and naturally social creatures. We are not intended to go through this life alone. Therapy is intended to be the space where you can share the truth about your pain or your struggles and be met with hope, encouragement, and compassion rather than judgment. If you are concerned about what others will think, you are under no obligation to share this information with anyone else. Then, you and I will work to create a strong network of social support around you, filled with people that want to see you happy, healthy, and successful.
