My Approach to Helping
You witnessed and felt injustice and pain from an early age and dreamed of a knight in shining armor coming to the rescue. You learned quickly that the world is an unpredictable and unsafe place. As a result, you wanted nothing more but make it better and be that knight in shining armor. If not you, who will?
Through life, you found yourself feeling most alive and good about yourself serving others, in the heat of the battle and in the eye of a crisis. You are an expert in knowing how to be and what to do in the midst of a crisis; rescuing victims, healing the wounded and sheltering the innocent. Your deep empathy for others and strong need to rescue and shield others is inseparable from who you are; it is the only way you've ever known to connect with the world. You also find yourself in relationships with people that need "rescuing." You're compelled to help and serve.
But as your body and mind keep score of all the things you've felt and witnessed, your armor starts weighing heavy on you. When things are quiet and there are no battles to fight or innocents to rescue, heavy memories creep in. The pain you felt and saw resurfaces seemingly out of nowhere and floods your mind and hijacks your body. Nightmares steal your sleep and connecting with family and friends gets more and more difficult because they won't understand. To deal with this you keep distant, ever-vigilant and restless, using work or an occasional drink to numb yourself and stay exhausted so you don't have to have to think and feel.
Are you that fierce warrior or selfless healer who saves and serves others, but feels your own needs can always wait, and everyone deserves help but you? If you find yourself struggling and exhausted, hiding your pain and feeling alone, WITH ME YOU WILL FIND HELP.
For the last ten years I’ve helped people whose lives were hijacked by trauma to regain a sense of safety and joy of living. An Air Force veteran and trauma clinician, I’m keenly attuned to the unique needs of military members, first responders, survivors, helping-professionals and their families, and how exposure to trauma (personal or secondary) can affect their well-being. To help people reclaim their lives from the grips of trauma, and find balance and self-compassion, I use therapy approaches that best address their unique needs. These include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) (a fancy term for therapy that’s known as one of the most effective trauma treatments with an 80% success rate) psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral and Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Are you ready to find ways to feel connected, important, understood, and cared for by others without neglecting your own needs?
