My Approach to Helping
Successful therapy helps a person to know themselves better and to feel free to be more fully themselves in all areas of their life. For couples this means being free to be yourself while still being close to your partner. I will work with you collaboratively to clarify your goals for coming to therapy and to help you to achieve those goals. It is very important for you to feel comfortable in the therapy sessions to be yourself and to explore new ideas, feelings, and behaviors. To help accomplish this I work to provide a warm, secure, and confidential environment with compassion, respect, and humor.
I have training and experience in a wide range of therapeutic techniques. Over the 16 years that I have been practicing I have learned to use different techniques based on the needs of the individual or couple. I tend to be practical and to teach practical skills in areas such as communication, relaxation, and assertiveness. I also work with people in more depth to understand underlying patterns of thought and behavior that may be causing problems in their life. My training in EMDR and Somatic Experiencing is particularly helpful for people that are healing from trauma or from childhoods where their needs weren't effectively met. I am comfortable working with a spiritual approach and with a mind-body approach. In the area of couple's therapy I have a background in understanding the underlying patterns of relationships, but also use practical techniques and Imago Therapy.
