My Approach to Helping

When the pressure of emotional pain and trauma becomes difficult to manage it can be such a relief to have someone to talk to who is in your corner. Someone who knows how to listen to you and see you for who you are. I am here for you and will help you find the inner resources that you probably didn't know you had. With these resources you will be able to experience the growth and change you are looking for in your life. Therapy helps you begin to remember how to trust yourself and recognize what matters most in your life.

Working with mindfulness and body centered practices I help you develop self-awareness, acceptance, and compassion in small actionable steps. You will learn about your autonomic nervous system (ANS), and how you can identify and regulate emotions such as anxiety, grief, anger, and depression. Many people find that by simply showing up for yourself in therapy new healthier patterns are set into motion that create lasting change and personal development.

Some people consider the idea of therapy to be scary or intimidating. I do my best to create a safe, honest, and real environment for you to come to where you can be who you are feeling however it is that you feel. Whether you want to learn how to deal with your anxiety in more effective ways, overcome a difficult habit, resolve intrusive thoughts or painful traumatic memories, or are looking to improve relationships, I will help you find more peace of mind, meaning and satisfaction in your life. My background is steeped in body-mind intelligence and mindfulness along with creativity, dance and art, which saved my life as a troubled youth. Practicing mindfulness and awareness helped me to redefine my identity and the meaning and purpose of my life, improving the quality of my life through patience, presence, and compassion. I use evidence based techniques from EMDR, CBT, DBT, ACT, SE, and Polyvagal theory and practices along with creative arts therapy approaches to meet you where you are and help you reach your goals. My approach is gentle, client centered, and empowering.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Self regulation is the ability to respond and adapt to the situations in life with a degree of flexibility and presence in thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Resiliency and adaptability is deeply imbedded in the autonomic nervous system (ANS). We know more about this now than ever before. It is speculated that approximately 80% of all health conditions are nervous system related. Without taking the time to reset on a nervous system level, it becomes more and more commonplace to move through life with a certain level of dis-regulation and distress without knowing why or what to do about it. The circumstances surrounding trauma and our general cultural attitudes do not often support the full completion and reset needed for the ANS to function as effectively as it is designed to do. We end up with layers of activation and "unfinished business" which has not had a chance to discharge and reset. The good news is that the ANS can be reset to its natural range of function with a little dedication and TLC. In therapy sessions we work directly with the body and mind to bring balance and resiliency back to the ANS and I teach effective exercises empowering my clients to practice self regulation in daily life.

What I love about being a therapist is that I get to hear your story and reflect back the strength, courage and potential I see in you. It is such an honor to be on a healing journey with a person, and to be witness to each person's self discovery. It takes bravery to reach out for support and to show up for yourself in this way, and I love reminding my clients about how brave they are and how I can see them doing their very best every day. Much of the deepest transformation happens in almost microscopic baby steps. I am here to believe in you when you have forgotten how.
