My Approach to Helping
I am a dedicated psychologist with two decades of experience counseling individuals, couples and families. My style of therapy combines cognitive behavioral, positive psychology, and acceptance and commitment approaches for individuals and family, and the Gottman Method for couples therapy.
I primarily work in individual therapy with adults and adolescents who are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief and loss, recovering from a traumatic event, and other stress management issues. I use a combination of approaches, including:
1. Client Centered Therapy, meeting you where you are in your emotional needs and letting you guide the the emotional journey
2. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), improving your moods by learning about and effecting changes among your thoughts, feelings and behaviors
3. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), using mindfulness and experiential skills to develop greater commitment to and acceptance of your emotions, as well behavior skills
More Info About My Practice
I work with couples based on the Gottman Method, which incorporates CBT as well as their own research based model of understanding forms of communication and interaction in relationships. With this approach, I help couples and other family relationships understand each other and increase affection, as well as helping in parent-child relationships.
I also specialize in psychological and psychoeducational assessment. I am regularly appointed for forensic psychological evaluations and have provided expert witness testimony in criminal, dependency, and family court cases. I have expertise in pre-bariatric surgery assessment and other health assessments.
I am a native of the Miami area, fluent in Spanish, and I also incorporate understanding of cultural and diversity issues into my practice. My training background includes a Ph.D. from the Psychology Department at the University of Florida in 2005 and a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Miami in 1999. My doctoral dissertation was on eating disorders among Latinas. I completed my pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral experience at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, in 2003-2004 with specialized training in Trauma Focused CBT treatment of post- September 11th PTSD in children and adults.
