My Approach to Helping
Marriage counseling is my specialty. For over 25 years I've been developing and perfecting an approach to couples counseling that is more effective in both the short and long terms. This passion is what has led to the creation of the "Well Marriage Center" and the couples counseling services we provide the Northern Virginia and DC communities. I've helped thousands of couples heal, strengthen, and rediscover what their unique "well marriage" can be. Our approach differs from the traditional models: we work with people's strengths instead of focusing on weaknesses. We get in there with you and help you solve problems and change the trajectory of your relationship through a positive approach that empowers each spouse and actually builds up the relationship. We're grateful for the thousands of satisfied couples who have trusted us to walk with them through this difficult process. Please visit our Well Marriage Center website for more information.
The Duration and Frequency of Therapy
We’ve been doing this long enough to know that it takes time for couples to make true and lasting changes. We trust changes have really begun to take hold if they’re happening for at least 6 to 10 months. Typically, with any marriage counselor who practices “brief therapy” like we do, you’ll normally do between 12 and 20 sessions, depending on the couple. Many counselors will do those 12-20 sessions at a weekly clip, and you’re done in 3 to 4 months. We start out with weekly sessions, but we’re a little quicker than others to move to every two weeks and then at the very end to meet once a month. Couples tend to like this because they would pay the same thing and have the same number of sessions, we just stretch them out and stay with them longer. Again, we're also focusing on "strengthening the relationship." We trust change that happens over 6 to 10 months. But count on weekly sessions to begin with. Every couple is different and your counselor will be able to advise as s/he begins working with you.
