My Approach to Helping
At some point during our lives, most of us will feel "stuck". Maybe it's a recurring thought, feeling, relationship, memory, parenting struggle, family of origin issue, loss, trauma, habit ... The reasons are many and very personal based on you and your particular situation. Talking about the hard things that are limiting your joy, satisfaction, fulfillment, and connection with other people can often help bring change. I use a variety of therapy tools, techniques, and styles during our work together. But mostly we just talk. I love my work, am passionate about personal growth and change, and want to hear you tell your story. Together, we will sort out pertinent issues and formulate a plan. We'll discover what you want from therapy and how best to achieve your goals and hopes.
How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist
My biggest asset as a therapist, aside from my passion for talking with folks, is my 56 years of life. I've had my own struggles and "growth opportunities", to put a positive spin on some very difficult experiences. Each has hurt, shaped, and sometimes confused me. And each experience has "grown me up". While your story will be the sole focus of our work together, know that I have been on both sides of the therapy room. My history (myself or others close to me) includes adoption, a dysfunctional family, abuse and trauma, health issues, infertility, parenting two children (son age 18, daughter age 22), a child with ADHD, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, narcissism, multiple losses, divorce, and career change and development. "Doing the work" has led to a healthy and fulfilling life, wonderful beyond my imagination. The same is possible for you. I've had some great friends and teachers along the way. We all need help, and asking for that help is courageous and brave.
