I truly believe that as we move through life most of us are doing our very best to deal with whatever challenges come our way despite the fact that, sometimes, our very best efforts just aren't adequate for the many difficult situations we may face.

Whatever our struggle, whether it's communication or trust, anger or anxiety, shame or frustration, there are probably times when some professional support can help us re-think our approach to a troublesome issue.

As we begin to make changes and experience personal growth, whether it's bettering our self-esteem, adjusting our perspective or improving control of our emotions, our own positive changes can spill over into an ability to relate in more positive and rewarding ways with the various worlds in which we live and love.

My practice includes work with individuals, couples and families faced with relationship issues such as intimacy, trust, communication and parenting as well as alcohol-related issues and the common problems faced by step- or blended families. I treat and educate about the all-too-common experiences of feeling overwhelmed or having vague feelings of unhappiness.

A significant part of the way I do therapy involves what I refer to as "psycho-education." This includes becoming more aware of your physical and emotional states both at home and at work. For instance, this might involve monitoring significant daily stressors, your level of anxiety, or when and how your anger shows itself. In general, I see education as the "silver bullet." In therapy, I believe that the degree to which I know myself empowers me to think, feel and behave in more emotionally healthy, functional ways. I invite all those with whom I work to embark on a journey toward greater emotional maturity.

More Info About My Practice

I seek to provide to all those with whom I work, that particular feeling of empowerment that comes with personal insight and an understanding of the psychodynamics of relationship. My motto is: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER; KNOW THYSELF.

My Guiding Ethical Principles

In doing therapy, I tend to be direct and directive. I tend to engage with my clients as opposed to asking the question, "And how does that make you feel?" By this, I don't mean that I don't care about my clients' feelings. However, I see therapy more as a dialogue rather than a monologue led by the client.

Being trained as a marriage and family therapist, I don't label clients, and especially, I don't label them as "resistant" if their progress is at a more measured pace. My training places a responsibility on me to find another approach to a client's problem. In all situations however, it is necessary to help clients understand that, more often than not, therapy is NOT a sprint.

To me, it is more difficult to find a psychotherapist with whom one is comfortable than to find a medical doctor. I think that, in many ways, the relationship IS the therapy!
