It is my responsibility to treat my clients with care, to understand their issues at depth, to support them unconditionally, to fully accept them in all their brokenness and pain, and to guide them faithfully to wholeness and well being. I believe that the most important element of therapy is the client/therapist relationship, trusting that healing begins when clients' problems arise and take shape in the therapeutic session.

More Info About My Practice

New clients enter my office feeling uncomfortable or even in acute pain. Frequently they do not know the exact source of their suffering. We are not trained in our culture to be aware of our thought processes and our emotional states. Though sometimes life-long or seemingly irresolvable, the difficulty's cause can often be identified very quickly and treatment can begin within one or two sessions.

My Role as a Therapist

My role is to offer my clients what Carl Rogers considered essential: unconditional positive regard, congruence, and empathy. He considered these to be the necessary and sufficient conditions for therapeutic change.

Along with offering this strong connection to each of my clients, it is my responsibility to keep abreast of research regarding improvements in the methods of therapy. I engage in ongoing training so that I can offer the latest discoveries in evidence-based treatments that work. I also engage in regular consultation groups with other professionals to hone my therapeutic skills.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

It can be very difficult to make the first call: there are 'more important' things to do; the phone weighs 50 pounds; you can't imagine how a stranger can possibly help you. Trusting that this process works can ease the worry and perhaps lighten the phone. Make an appointment. If you don't like the first therapist, try another. Therapists understand that your choice is extremely personal, and who your therapist will be is your decision.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Choose a therapist you can trust. He or she must offer consistent non-judgmental acceptance of your distress and difficulties. Your therapist must "get" you, must understand your problems, and must be willing to sit with you to the depth of your pain. Your therapist must believe in you and in their ability to help.

I often tell my clients, "Therapy works." Trust this. Make an appointment with me or another counselor and give it a try.
