I'm of the opinion that most of us, deep down, are hurting, and often find ourselves in difficult places in life as a result of unhealthy ways of dealing with that hurt. What I try to do is listen as best I can so as to understand the nature of your pain, the ways in which you have tried to deal with that pain, how those ways have worked and how they haven't, and what new ways can be learned and practiced so that you can move forward into a life that is saner, healthier, and more whole.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

It's not uncommon to be ambivalent about the need for change. That's why it can be beneficial to go to therapy for at least one session. Just fifty minutes in front of a therapist can bring a unique perspective to whatever your issues may or may not be, and from there you may be in a better position to judge whether or not more sessions would indeed be a good fit for you.

My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'

One of the reasons I do not take insurance is that insurance companies require that you be diagnosed, which inevitably requires that you be labeled in some way. While words like 'bipolar disorder,' or 'borderline personality disorder,' or 'major depressive disorder' can indeed be helpful for many people, it is my view that the issues that clients deal with are unique to those individuals, even though commonalities may exist with the issues experienced by others. If you have been diagnosed previously, however, and having this diagnosis is of benefit to you, I have no issue honoring that choice and will attempt to work with it with the maximum benefit of you in mind.
