About Matthews

Matthews is a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It covers 17 square miles. Matthews is named after Edward Watson Matthews—a former director of the Carolina Central Railroad Company. The town was incorporated in 1879.

Matthews has a population of 32,000 people. Ninety-six percent of the people in Matthews are citizens of the United States. Roughly 2,000 military veterans live in the town.

The racial composition of Matthews is 78% white, 11% black, 5% Hispanic, and 3% Asian. Foreign-born people make up 11% of the population. Thirteen percent of residents have a native language that is not English. 

People in Matthews earn a mean annual wage of $37,100. The median household income is $75,200. Fifty-two percent of adults age 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree. Roughly 6% of residents live in poverty.

Mental Health in Matthews

Youth mental health is a key issue in the town of Matthews. Around 1,000 people in the state die from prescription drug overdose each year. Most teens obtain the prescriptions drugs they abuse from family members. The Matthews Police Department is working with Safekids of Charlotte Mecklenburg to reduce drug overdose fatalities in the community. The department offers a drop off box where residents can discard unused or unwanted prescription drugs safely.

In 2018, arrangements were made for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) District to receive $4.7 million. The money is for hiring mental health professionals to assist students with emotional and mental health issues. The goal is to hire 17 school social workers, 33 elementary school counselors, and 10 school psychologists.
