My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'
One way of viewing mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, is that they result from coping gone wrong. This occurs for many folks when the coping style they use initially is very effective and therefore is continued despite circumstances changing. For example perhaps a child growing up in an abusive environment copes by withdrawing and not trusting others. In that situation it makes perfect since for the child to not trust others because they are not trustworthy. However, when that situation changes, say the child grows up and is no longer living with the abuser, the same style of coping continues although it is no longer adaptive. As an adult instead of being helpful it is creating anxiety when around other people and preventing positive relationships. Often what we need to heal is compassionate awareness around what that old style of coping, how it has been helpful, and how we can now change it, so that it is no longer creating suffering. Counseling is a powerful tool in this process that can assist with providing compassionate reflection and a space to develop awareness and change.
