My Approach to Helping

I believe that hope for improvement or personal growth requires two things. The first is willpower, or motivation for change. If you're considering therapy, you probably already have that. The second is Waypower, or clarity on what the path forward looks like. If you know you want to make some changes but you're not sure how to get there, that's where I can help. If you are looking for relief from symptoms of anxiety or depression...if you are navigating a major life transition and it feels harder than you think it should...if you are feeling "stuck"... or your relationships are not quite what you want them to be, therapy can help.

At Waypower Counseling, I specialize in individualized mental health counseling via teletherapy. I work primarily from a cognitive behavioral and person-centered framework, and I believe that ultimately all people are experts on themselves. My goal is to help my clients find clarity in their personal goals and create a clear pathway to reach those goals.

I believe that most people experience challenges in mental health at some point in their lives, and when that point comes, therapy is a valuable tool in recovery, relief, and personal growth. If you have questions about the therapy process, you're not sure, or you want to consult before you commit to an appointment, I'm happy to answer your questions.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

If our struggles and obstacles in life improved simply by our wanting them to, life would be easy. But we all know they don't, and it's not. Making real positive change in our mental health, our outlook, and our relationships requires not only a desire for change, but also some concrete steps to take to make the change happen. We often need to shift perspective, to learn new ways of communicating, and to change our thinking patterns and habits in order to find positive personal growth and relief from mental health challenges. In my view, building clarity on what the path forward looks like is the purpose of psychotherapy.

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

Taking the first step toward therapy can feel uncomfortable. I get it. It can help to have some idea of what you can expect, and it can help to talk to your therapist before your first appointment. If you have questions about the therapy process, if you want to make sure I'm a good match for you, or if you're on the fence about therapy altogether, I'm happy to consult with you by phone. Feel free to give me a call, even if it's to say "hi, I'm not sure about this." I'll be glad to hear from you!
