My Approach to Helping

Everyone wants to be happy! How to get it? How to keep it? Not so common. What I know now after 20 years of providing effective therapy, is that all people suffer, we all experience exquisite pain and it is very hard to know how to stop the pain, without first understanding where it came from. Understanding every person, thoroughly, is the first step in doing effective therapy. When we are understood, really understood, then with the help of an experienced therapist who knows effective, sound and scientifically proven ways to manage the emotional pain, the emotional turmoil, anxiety, paralyzing fears, sadness, and nagging negative thoughts that just wont go away.....can finally and permanently be resolved.
Therapy is a process yes, but it's a process of building hope, by increasing understanding of the 'self' and by increasing awareness of all the factors and variables that work together to make us who we are, why we do what we do, why we think the way we think and therefore, how to change those parts about ourselves that we want to that no longer serve to help us achieve goals, happiness and lives we can love. Self judgments, shame, blame, hurts, unwanted memories, unwanted and even uninvited thoughts, blocked or suppressed emotions and that all-consuming pressure to "make it" in this life, create immense suffering and internal torment for countless people. Having a safe, comfortable, non-judgmental and truly inviting environment to work in, to collaboratively find the solutions to these problems that make sense, while finding answers to the "whys" that so often truly do need to be answered, is the key to making therapy work, and work permanently. Happiness naturally comes to us when the burdens that hold happiness at bay are removed. Experiencing inner peace, contentment, calmness and even joy are the rights that each human being has while journeying through this life. Therapy is about finding the barriers that stand in the way of happiness, whether those barriers come from habits, thoughts, emotions or actions, once those barriers are understood and resolved, goals are achieved and happiness rises up and takes it's position in the human heart, naturally.

Beth Lewis, LMHC, is the owner of CBT Pinellas, LLC and a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified DBT Clinician. Had a Negative Therapy Experience?

Lately, so many of our new clients have been sharing with us their own personal experiences they've had in previous therapy, where goals weren't first determined and therefore outcomes were vague and even negative; our hearts immediately go out to them. We at CBT Pinellas acknowledge the fact that we are all human, and we all experience emotional suffering and pain, sooner or later. Our first goal is always to clearly understand the client's specific situation(s), history of events that contribute to current problems and current needs by discovering who our clients really are without assumptions or diagnosing based on similarities with others. All people are uniquely different, so creating effective treatment interventions and plans is paramount to witnessing successful personal growth and recovery.
We know that what our clients experience on a daily basis is painful, hard and even impossible to tolerate. And yet there is hope! There are solutions and every person deserves to seek and find those solutions from sound clinicians with a passion for healing and the expertise to deliver gold standard care. People need tools and skills to overcome these obstacles and CBT Pinellas clinicians do just that. Clients learn to master their thought life, regulate their emotions and behavior, while also learning to communicate in ways that increase the health of their relationships, especially their most important relationship, the relationship with 'self'.
