My Approach to Helping
I work collaboratively with my clients. Through compassion, empathy, trust, and humor, I help them to discover their own inner compass instead of living a life driven by gaining acceptance from others. I help heal emotional pain by looking at their "story" - circumstances of the past and present which keep them locked in behaviors which were needed for survival at the time, but are no longer productive. Together we come up with a set of goals, identify their strengths, and then sharpen the tools and skills needed to not only achieve those goals, but to continue to allow them to lead joyful and genuine lives.
I am not only a well trained professional - but a fellow traveler who has had my own share of negotiating life's challenges. I have a deep understanding for the shame, pain, and confusion that life sometimes hands to us, and an experience of how to push beyond that to lead a happy, healthy, balanced life.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I am qualified as a psychotherapist both by my professional training and by having successfully navigated my own challenges in a way that makes me passionate about helping others. I really enjoy working with those who are dealing with grief of some kind; whether it be in the form of a person, dream, hope, job, or illness. I am entirely comfortable with the pain of loss, and with the anger and guilt that often accompany it. I don't believe that it is a time-limited issue or that society does a good job of providing a safe place for grief in general.
I also love working with women's issues; depression, anxiety, career changes, menopause, divorce, empty nest, parenting kids/adults with special needs and others, taking care of elderly parents, childlessness, relationship issues, re-inventing oneself, and a myriad of other issues. Having been both a stepmother and biological mother of children with special needs, I have a good understanding for those challenges.
