We are exhausted, scared and not sure which direction to head. I'm doing things I never thought I would be doing. I need help, I think? If this is what you are saying, there is a good chance that it is time to take the next step and come in for therapy.

Helping couples to heal old pains that continue to show up in their current relationship is the primary focus of couples counseling. Helping couples grow and develop intimate and loving relationships is the outcome of effective therapy. As the old pains clear up, couples experience more energy and excitement for their current relationship. This leads the couple to focus on what is right and good in their relationship.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

Unaware would best describe me before I began the process of becoming a therapist. I had worked with a few therapists in the past but did not feel like it helped much. When I decided to become a therapist and enter a counseling training program, like all students I had to go through my own therapy. Learning about this requirement left me with the thought "for what?" I was not even sure therapy worked based on my previous experiences. While it has been a long road at times, in reflection becoming a therapist has been a life and relationship saving experience. I am now awake to my own places of pain and continue to find ongoing healing as I work through the lasting impact of my own lived experiences.

Therapy is about the couple or person I am working with, I intentionally limit the use of my own story in the therapeutic journey at the same time my clients can trust that I have felt and experienced the depths of my own pain, shame, fear, and confusion which makes it all the easier to be empathic with clients as they face what they fear most. From having this experience for myself I can now say I live with increased personal joy and relational connection.

What Makes up a Problem?

There are both the self-evident experiences that can create problems for people. Then there are the intangible and subtle experiences of life that we do not think impacted us but actually have profoundly impacted us. They just weren't obvious and so we don't see how it is impacting us now. Therapy helps make the critical connections to help couples move forward.
