My Approach to Helping
I am a therapist who values diversity and the individual worldview of each person. It is my understanding that as humans we are relational people and the majority of life problems arise out of problematic ways of relating or connecting with others. I believe there is tremendous potential for personal growth within each individual. My role as a counselor is to assist individuals, children, families that are motivated to change at least one aspect of their life that they feel is causing disturbance of their well-being. The unique experience of the therapeutic relationship addresses feelings, thoughts, patterns of behavior and issues that are experienced in life. It is my sincere desire to facilitate a nonjudgmental safe place to explore and be attentive to these experiences. I use an integrated and eclectic approach to counseling that addresses the whole person body, mind and spirit. I utilize methods with a foundation of safety, trust, and person-centered treatment. This treatment may include Trauma-focused CBT, Lifespan Integration, S.A.F.E. (Somatic, Attachment-Focused) EMDR, Play therapy, Sandtray Therapy, and Strength-based therapy, depending on the goals of each client.
S.A.F.E. EMDR and Lifespan Integration are both modalities I have training in and I am passionate about. Both are brain-based therapies. S.A.F.E. EMDR is used to reprocess old adaptive memories with their images, sounds, smells, tastes, emotions, body sensations and beliefs holding on to what is useful and discarding those that are no longer valid. This type of reprocessing places the old difficult memories in the past and strengthens positive memories.
Lifespan Integration guides the client to imaginary re-visit the past experience, bringing into the past whatever is needed to resolve the memory. After the memory is resolved, the therapist leads the client repeatedly through time to the present using a Time Line of visual images of scenes from the client’s life. Lifespan Integration is a very gentle method that works on a deep neural level to change strategies that may no longer be relevant or adaptive. LI therapy helps people connect unpleasant feelings and dysfunctional patterns with the memories of the past events from which they originated. Making connections at a deep level of body-mind “re-sets” the neural system to connect with current life situations in more adaptive ways.
It would be my pleasure to assist you in accessing ways to work toward well-being in a safe and welcoming gentle way. Feel free to contact me for a free 15-minute consultation.
