Mental Health in Brunswick

Substance abuse is a major concern in Cumberland county. From 2013 to 2017, there was a steady increase in the number of overdose deaths in the county. However, the rate of fatal overdoses appears to be on the decline in 2018.

The decline may be due in part to the county’s Opioid Intervention Court, which began operating in March of this year. The purpose of the court is to assist individuals with opioid addiction who come in contact with the criminal justice system. Residents who agree to participate can get a therapy, medication, and other support services through the program.

Access to appropriate mental health care may be a challenge for some Cumberland County residents. In Brunswick, 10% of residents do not have health insurance.
