My Approach to Helping
At this point in your life, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed with emotional pain. It seems like everything you've tried so far just isn't working well. When facing and approaching what troubles you, I offer counseling with support and wisdom for healing, so that you may gain new awareness and make necessary changes, or necessary acceptance. You may be navigating a crisis, a transition of any sort, or deep traumas that seem beyond your ability to handle. Each of us is on a path of learning and self-discovery, and now something compels you to reach out for help through counseling. To join for healing and transformation, I work with individuals (adolescent and adult) and couples, providing both brief counseling and in-depth psychotherapy.
I believe psychotherapy can be part of your commitment to yourself to slow down and attend to parts of yourself that need attention. The same can be said regarding your significant relationship if that is what is calling for attention at this time. I am committed to providing a caring, authentic and comfortable space for your personal and/or relationship healing and growth. My experience over many years of life reinforces my deep interest and trust in the value of cultivating emotional wellness. My approach and skills have been useful to help process and move beyond considerable anxiety, depression, anger and traumas including post-traumatic stress. Challenges I also frequently work with involve working through a crisis where normal resources don't suffice or life transitions of all sorts. My holistic orientation is designed to be flexible to meet a client's unique needs and interests. The process helps you tap into parts of yourself that have been waiting for attention, including the creative expression of your True Self.
My Therapy Focus
I work within a "body-emotions-mind-spirit-systems" context which leads to the most lasting and satisfying changes in people's lives. My extensive personal and professional experience is used to attend to personal struggles and strengths, finding inner wisdom for healing to recover peace and growth. My background with Gestalt, Cognitive-behavioral, Family systems, and solution-focused therapy weaves well with dreamtending, yoga and expressive arts. My eclectic style of psychotherapy encourages and supports clients to explore needs and resources that we, families and culture, typically neglect. I also use EMDR, a specific protocol using bilateral reprocessing that is very effective in helping clear trauma and other anxieties. Many other self-care skills are nurtured in session, including EFT, emotional freedom technique. Most of these translate to useful approaches to practice in daily life to add to self-regulation and growth. Among the resources I make available to my clients is the audio series I recorded titled "Tuning Within is a Lifesaver" that covers breath basics, a practical meditation technique, and progressive deep relaxation for home use to reinforce these holistic stress reduction skills. When I work with couples, I often help them face the pain of estrangement, infidelity, emotional abuse and more--a myriad of dysfunctional patterns that typically stem back to childhood. By encouraging intimacy with oneself, partners learn how to identify and express feelings, thoughts and needs more effectively-and to listen attentively and actively. By establishing safety and empathy, couples may move on through healing into more satisfying and committed relationships. At times the fissure is too deep so ways to separate peacefully are sought and given. As a licensed marriage and family therapist, my solid training and experiences enables me to facilitate positive changes. I believe that developing our curiosity, patience, empathy and commitment is essential to our emerging selves and relationships. Overall, the focus for therapy returns to you the client and your unique needs and Self. Client feedback has remained a critical, vital part of the process. It is very satisfying to me for to witness and facilitate healing for the many individuals and couples who have engaged in counseling with me since beginning my independent practice years ago.
