Portland is the government seat of Cumberland County, Maine. It has a land area of 21 square miles. The community was known by many names in its early years, including Machigonne, Elbow, and Falmouth. The city served as Maine’s capital from 1820 to 1831. 

Portland is the largest city in Maine. It has a population of 66,900 people, 3,200 of which are veterans. Of residents 25 years and older, 47% have a Bachelor's degree.

The racial composition of Portland is 82% white, 8% black, 4% Asian, and 3% Hispanic. Over 13% of Portland residents were born in a foreign country.
