I work on the basis that every individual has their own unique characteristics, views, experiences, and perceptions even if they have shared commonalities. I adapt and tailor psychotherapy to the individuality of each client and the singularity of that client's specific situation or experience rather than a "one-size-fits-all" model. I utilize play therapy with children because it provides them with a safe and non-threatening approach that allows them to express themselves verbally and non-verbally.

More Info About My Practice

I specialize in providing individual therapy to clients with depression including prenatal and postpartum depression, anxiety, complicated grief, and trauma. Part of my work also involves working with clients on building healthy coping skills for managing everyday life issues such as relationship, family, work and academic stress, loss, medical and psychological disability, problems around conflict resolution, relationship and communication skills.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I help clients to cope with grief and bereavement, manage difficult times surrounding loss and adjust to the practical and psychological changes that the loss of a significant other, job, or health has created, learn to self-care and live with the loss and painful feelings, reconnect with life and other people in their lives, find hope and pleasure again and create a "new normal" for themselves. In working with depression, anxiety, chronic pain and trauma, I help clients better understand the symptoms of those diagnoses and the biological, psychosocial and environmental factors including diet, health conditions and lifestyle choices that positively and negatively impact their symptoms and create realistic goals, expectations and changes that will lead to improved mental health. Most importantly, I help clients realize that depression, anxiety, trauma and chronic pain are feelings, thoughts and experiences, not who they are and does not define them.

My Role as a Therapist

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process, and for me building an effective and collaborative therapy relationship starts with not only hearing, but actively listening to what your specific and unique needs are and tailoring the treatment approach and pace of our work to meet what will work for you. I see my role as a facilitator, not to just listen, but to actively engage my clients and help them come to terms with their emotions, thoughts and experiences, and develop self-awareness, insight, meaning and healthy coping mechanisms so that they can feel empowered in their own innate ability to heal and manage their difficulties more effectively.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

The thought of coming to therapy can be very daunting and does not mean that you are not resilient. It takes a lot of courage and strength to ask for help and allow oneself to receive help and support. Building your strengths, skills, and resources through treatment adds to your resilience, and helps you tap into that resilience and work on getting your life back in balance.
