About Huntsville

Huntsville is the government seat of Madison County, Alabama. A portion of the city lies in Limestone County. Originally called Twickenham, the area was renamed “Huntsville” in 1811. Huntsville covers 209 square miles and is the fourth largest city in the state. 

Huntsville has a population of 195,000 people. The population increased by 8% from 2010 to 2017. Ninety-six percent of the people in Huntsville are United States citizens. Roughly 17,300 military veterans live in the city.

The racial composition of Huntsville is 59% white, 31% black, 6% Hispanic, and 2% Asian. Around 7% of residents were born in a foreign country. Eight percent speak a language other than English at home. Huntsville is home to 7,500 Spanish speakers and 800 German speakers. 

Huntsville residents earn a mean annual wage of $32,400. The median household income is $51,400. The homeownership rate is 59%. Roughly 18% of people in Huntsville live in poverty.

Huntsville Emergency Medical Services, Inc. (HEMSI) is a not-for-profit ambulance service in Madison County. In 2017, HEMSI received and responded to more than 400 drug overdose calls.
