My Approach to Helping

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and Certified TeleMental Health Provider in Moscow, Idaho. I provide a comforting, safe, and non-judgmental environment via video session for Idaho residents where you can openly discuss and address your problems and concerns. My personal interest is in working with Veterans, college students, and members of the LGBTQIA community.

I practice Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These theories propose that: (a) our beliefs and thoughts greatly influence our emotional reactions and behaviors, (b) you can manage frustrations, stress, and problems effectively through problem solving and acceptance, (c) focusing on the current moment can reduce guilt, shame, and fear, (d) by developing healthy emotional expression and impulse control, you can effectively cope during distressful situations.

Both approaches are effective for a variety of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, adjustment disorders, addiction, and eating disorders, just to name a few. The fundamental aim of REBT is to resolve distress-provoking thoughts and beliefs that contribute to maladaptive perceptions, distressing emotions, and unwanted behaviors. DBT aims to provide you with skills in distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness techniques to promote effective coping. By developing positive ways of thinking, restructuring attitudes, and building effective coping skills, you can effectively reduce or alleviate distressing emotional responses and self-defeating thoughts and behaviors.

REBT and DBT are action-based approaches where the counselor is actively involved during counseling sessions and may utilize a variety of techniques to aid clients. Techniques may include role-playing, metaphor, reframing beliefs and attitudes, imagery, affirmations, relaxation exercises, active problem-solving, writing assignments, verbally redefining problems, real-world activities, and even humor. This active involvement in the counseling process has shown to effectively help individuals develop their own coping skills that can last a lifetime because you develop these skills; not the counselor. REBT and DBT can also improve self-esteem, self-acceptance, communication skills, motivation, confidence, and emotional well-being so you can live a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

As a Certified TeleMental Health Counselor in the state of Idaho, I offer video-based counseling sessions for Idaho residents who prefer to attend counseling online. The video-based counseling platform I use to conduct online counseling is secure and easy to use. Simply click on the secure link in your confirmation email to attend your counseling session. If attending the session by smartphone, you will need to install the Simple Practice Telehealth App prior to your scheduled session (link for install is provided in your confirmation email). If attending by desktop, you will need to have a webcam installed and ready to use before your session. Attending counseling online has been made simple and easy! There is no need to travel to your counselor's office; saving you time, money, and hassle.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

There are many presenting concerns that I have personal experience with. While my previous struggles will never be exactly the same as your struggles, I can often relate and offer genuine empathy and compassion because I've been there. My clients often express their appreciation for my ability to relate to difficult life situations. Experiencing difficulties are hard in the moment and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel isn't always easy. However, you will have emotional support throughout your journey to mental health.
