Experiencing psychological distress is inevitable because of how imperfect we all are. Emotions such as stress, sadness, frustration, disappointment, and confusion are universal and part of our shared human experience. Each of us interprets and deal with our circumstances through familiar ways which we know how. However, sometimes we get stuck in our unhealthy coping patterns and continue to suffer in silence, affecting ourselves and others around us.

Yet, in all pain therein lies an opportunity for growth. Growth takes place when we believe that we can improve and find purpose and hope, even in worst situations. When we are psychologically healthy and balanced, we are able to embrace our own emotional states and tap into our own inner resources and support systems around us (e.g., school, work, family, community) to manage our everyday challenges. Together, we can work towards a goal that is meaningful to you.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

If you are feeling nervous or uncertain about trying out therapy, you are not alone. Having to approach a therapist for help can seem really daunting. After all, you are choosing to open yourself up to a person you hardly know. What if I can't trust her? What do I have to share? Will therapy be effective? Do I really need external help with my issues? These are some common concerns I hear from my clients when they first approach me.

Built on Trust
The therapeutic relationship can only start when there is trust. How do we develop trust? As your therapist, I will aim to provide you with a safe environment that can enable you to share your difficulties with me without feeling judged or threatened. On your end, it would take courage and patience for you to help me understand what you are going through. You have the right to decide how much you would like to share with me. Everything you share with me will be confidential unless there are reasonable grounds to believe that you are likely to harm yourself or another person.

Problems do not surface overnight and likewise, they cannot go away instantly once you begin to see a therapist. In other words, attending therapy sessions by itself is usually not the only solution. As your therapist, I will help facilitate a process whereby you can take concrete and gradual steps towards your desired goals. For change to occur, new knowledge and skills have to be put to practice in your daily routine. Sometimes, new or unexpected situations may surface and that would also require time to work through. Regardless, therapy can last from a few weeks to few years because it is a subjective experience that is dependent on your needs and circumstances.

Reason for Seeking Therapy
People often think that therapy is only for the emotionally unwell. True, therapy can help with treating mental health issues through symptom reduction and management. However, therapy can also benefit everyone as it promotes wellness in general. Sometimes people go to therapy so that they can learn how to improve the quality of their relationships, career, health, etc. After all, who wouldn't benefit from meeting with someone who can help them reflect on life's struggles and work on increasing life satisfaction? :)
