My Approach to Helping
The human experience is an individually unique and dynamic phenomenon. We each journey upon obstacles and difficulties which we may not always be able to overcome by relying on our own resources.
Seeking a trained help professional to guide us through these periods of emotional, psychological, and physical burden is often a difficult and intimidating process. I understand the crucial issues of trust and empathy, and respect my client's needs in seeking for help to overcome and cope with their individual challenges and to live with greater empowerment in their lives.
I have been a professional Counselling Psychologist for more than 12 years in different countries and cultures from North America (USA) to Asia (Kuala Lumpur). Having worked in major hospitals, universities, and private practice (US Veterans Administration, Monash University, University of Malaya Medical Centre, etc.), I have seen clients from very different walks of life; with and without psychiatric and medical diagnoses; from individual issues to relational ones. My client populations range in age from adolescents, adults, to the elderly.
I am trained in and use a number of different approaches best tailored to a client to aid them in the process of healing emotionally, psychologically, and physically. I regularly use Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Client-Centered Therapy, Integrative Psychotherapy, Existential Therapy, and elements of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I also use Habit Reversal Training for Tourette's Syndrome.
I am a Canadian expatriate from Calgary, Alberta and have been working in Kuala Lumpur for the last 8 years. Through my work with a wide network of expat and Malaysian clients, I continue to learn and integrate cultural competency.
A visit with me begins with an intake session where I will come to understand your history and other relevant information, difficulties and needs, and the main goals for therapy. You will receive feedback, recommendation, and general overview of the therapeutic approach should you decide to continue. I will evaluate progress on a continual basis and will remain flexible with you throughout the therapy process to maximize your well-being.
