Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

If you're having difficulties breaking a bad habit or changing a pattern of behavior that just isn't working for you, I can help. My approach is largely behavioral in focus as I believe, and research indicates, that behavior change is often the most effective way to produce psychological and emotional change. While it may be difficult to BE happy, it's not that difficult to ACT happy. The next time you're having a bad day make yourself smile, and see if it brightens your mood a little (I bet it will!).

What Makes up a Problem?

This is an interesting question and one that is at the core of psychotherapy. The commonly held view is that psychotherapy is all about helping people solve problems that they are facing, whether it's related to mood as in depression, cognitive difficulties as in ADHD, or functional as in relationship difficulties. The key thing to keep in mind is that problems are relational in nature and that context is critically important. For example, feeling drowsy is a good thing when one is in bed trying to fall asleep, but for somebody driving a car in the middle of the night it can become quite PROBLEMATIC. With this in mind, I strive to help people gain a better understanding of their symptoms (i.e., problems) from a functional perspective. If I can help an individual meet a certain functional need that was not being met as a result of a symptom, the reported symptom by definition is no longer a problem. While this may seem like semantics, this change in perspective can have a profound impact on functioning and can improve one's overall quality of life.
