All of us need help at different points in our lives, especially during life transitions. Kids experience a multitude of significant life transitions as they grow and develop, and can often benefit from additional support.

I am grateful for the privilege to be a safe place for children and adolescents during those seasons in their lives when they may feel overwhelmed. I recognize that trusting your child's heart with another person requires the highest degree of trust for any caregiver, and it should. I treat each child I meet with unconditional positive regard and remain open and honest with every caregiver.

I primarily see children from ages 3 to 17 who are dealing with issues related to life transitions, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and abuse.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Play therapy is recommended for children from ages 3-12 specifically because of how the child's brain develops. The stage of development known as the formal operation stage typically begins around age 12 and lasts through adulthood. This stage is when people develop the ability to use logical thought, systematic planning, deductive reasoning, and understand abstract concepts. All of those skills are necessary to have in order to benefit from talk therapy. Thus, kids who are under 12 cannot verbalize their feelings like we can as adults. Instead, they communicate those feeling through their play - so they benefit from play therapy.

One of my favorite quotes about play therapy is "birds fly, fish swim, and children play" because Garry Landreth is communicating just how natural play is for children. Play therapists believe that play is children's language, and toys are their words. Kiddos will "play out" what they need to process through in the playroom just as you would "talk out" what you needed to process through in therapy.
