Had a Negative Therapy Experience?
A little self-disclosure...My first experience as a therapy client was horrible. It took me over 5-years to build up the courage to see a therapist and in less than 45-minutes she was able to discourage me from going back for another 3-years. I felt that she minimized my problems and was not really listening to what I was struggling to put into words. It was on that day that I decided to completely change careers from corporate sales and training to mental health counseling. I did not want anyone else to have to go through what I did. Since then, my promise is to always have an open mind and open ear for all of my clients; to treat everyone with the upmost compassion, kindness, and unconditional positive regard; and to build a strong and healthy therapeutic relationship that is a safe place for honest disclosure and vulnerability. I will be upfront about my scope of practice and limitations. If I am not the right therapist for you, I will tell you and will help you find someone who is. That is part of the process sometimes. Finding the right therapist will be worth it in the long run. Your mental well-being is priceless. (re)Treat Yourself Well.
