Billing and Insurance

I don't currently accept insurance, but I can provide documentation if clients wish to submit to an insurance company for "out of network" benefit coverage

Fees: My regular "full" fee is $220 for 50 min, but I can be VERY flexible to make therapy possible for motivated people with financial constraints. Whatever we eventually work out as a fee, I typically charge it for the initial session to encourage people to seek help actively.

Facing challenges that you want to work through safely in confidence? Troubled by relationships, parenting, school or work? Fighting anxiety, depression or life-limiting rules or patterns? Ready for a new beginning?

Our experience is shaped by habits and expectations that are maintained by loyalty to important relationships, and by confirming experience. They affect our relationships, success, and happiness.

Therapy can help. Hurtful habits and expectations can be retired, and new ones can be implicitly learned, or chosen and implemented. My practice of therapy is as diverse as my clients, following their deep and increasingly explicit goals, and their changing preferences.

Growing out of shyness and an early focus on math, physics and neuroscience, my own journey is one of growing safety, emotional presence and integration of body, thought and feeling, while letting go of youthful habits of emotional survival.

In fifteen-plus years as a therapist, I have worked with people facing grief, displacement, growing up, parenting, generational differences, career transitions, work organization and communication, substances, sexual preference, learning disorders, ADHD, multiple stressors, depression, anxiety, abuse, neglect, and relationship issues. Clients often fear that their problems will be overwhelming, but even when experiences are frustrating, grim or frightening, sharing them in therapy can be relieving and enlivening. Alternatives then become possible.

More Info About My Practice

My full fee is $220 for 50 minutes and I have a significant sliding scale. If you are committed to therapy, and particularly if you are a student or single parent, I can be very flexible with my rate and still be fully engaged in your therapy. My offices are in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Berkeley. For details see my website. As part of my own self-care, I do not deal with insurance companies. However, I am happy to format bills for reimbursement if you have out-of-network coverage or a flexible spending account. I am very open to initial consultations to see if we might be a match, and you do not need to worry about pressure or hurting me.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

A good-fitting therapist will help you feel more comfortable being the person you are, when you are not inhibited by guilt, shame, fear or conflicting loyalties/responsibilities. When looking for a therapist, go into your initial consultation hoping for the help you want and return if you find it. If you don't find it, schedule an initial session with someone else. Don't feel you need to evaluate a bunch of therapists, hold back to protect them or yourself, or distort yourself to be kind to a therapist who doesn't get you. Do express your needs, reactions and misgivings in real time, as much as you're able. Do give yourself time to think and feel, talk to trusted friends and trust your intuition.
