My Approach to Helping

I’m a straight ally working with adolescents, young adults, and adults around depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and pandemic-related issues. Even after more than 30 years, I remain deeply passionate about my work and continually humbled by my clients' resilience and innate strength. I especially enjoy working with young adults, women in transition, and queer or questioning folks. I encourage everyone to screen several therapists and choose the one with whom they feel most heard, respected, and safe. Please don’t settle for anything less.

More Info About My Practice

I’m a mother, wife, and dog-mom who can neither whistle nor swim. I’m uber-friendly, quasi-funny, and a good therapist- though not for everyone. We’ll get a good sense of fit when you call. If it makes sense to meet, we’ll schedule. If not, I’ll get you to one of my gifted, trusted colleagues. Either way, kudos for looking into therapy!

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

For over 26 years, I've been helping people discover effective coping and communication skills and break self-destructive patterns. In addition to therapy, I provide addictions counseling and DOT-SAP services. I specialize in substance abuse and dual-diagnosis issues and especially enjoy working with young adults and impaired professionals or those in recovery.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Competent therapists demonstrate compassion, integrity, and outstanding listening skills. They are respectful, caring, non-judgmental and passionate about their work. They offer suggestions and feedback but also know when to shut up. Talking with a therapist is very different than talking with a friend or family member. Competent therapists don't share their personal problems or try to develop anything other than a professional relationship with clients. Therapists may *never* engage in romantic or sexual relationships with clients. Therapists should not ever shame, berate, threaten, or yell at clients. Some other factors to consider when checking out a therapist: is the office private, quiet, and clean? Does the therapist appear calm and professional? Does she ask relevant questions and really listen to responses? Do you feel respected and valued? Does the therapist appear warm, confident, and attentive? Does she seem interested in you and knowledgeable about your particular difficulties? Does she offer useful and appropriately timed feedback? Some warning signs: the therapist somehow frightens you, appears intoxicated, preoccupied, disinterested, extremely disorganized, or forgetful. Pay attention to your instincts. Do you feel this therapist "gets it" and wants to help you? Do you feel confident in hisher clinical skills and knowledge? The best therapeutic relationship is one in which you feel heard, safe, and respected. Please don't settle for anything less.
