My Approach to Helping

The decision to enter into therapy can be unsettling, but can be life changing. There are times we may need to process our experiences with another to help identify underlying issues causing certain thoughts, emotions and behaviors. We may need to address unresolved issues from our past to become more self-aware, to create clarity and peace of mind. We may also need to change our perception because our thoughts influence the world we see. These changes are represented in my favorite quote by Maya Angelou, “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.”

I have worked with adolescents, adults, LGBTQ+ community, couples and families for over 10 years. I have also worked with individuals who have suffered from trauma and struggled with their spiritual beliefs. I am fully trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which can help one heal from distressing life experiences. EMDR helps unwind the nervous system from traumatic or painful memories, allowing for organic experiences of clarity and contentment.

My approach to counseling utilizes different disciplines with an emphasis on Cognitive Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and Mindfulness. I am able to provide you with a safe and supportive environment where you can share your emotions, beliefs and process through your experiences. Walk and Talk Therapy can also be included to gain the benefits of nature and exercise. I was raised speaking English and Portuguese and understand cultural diversity. **Falo português e ficaria honrada em atender você e sua família.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

As I was growing up, I would react to situations without having a full understanding that we have the ability to observe the situation at hand and consider different reaction that may be more effective - this helped me understand the power in how we perceive things - and that we can change our perceptions. I learned to become aware of the triggers that caused me to have negative thoughts - which lead to negative emotions - which then lead to negative behaviors. I was grateful when I learned about 'Assertive Communication' and the importance of speaking up and saying what we need to say - in a respectful manner. I also appreciated learning about 'Learned Behaviors' and how these automatic behaviors and reactions can be changed once we become aware of why we are responding the way we are. It was also very helpful when I learned we can help others while identifying the importance of setting boundaries so we do not begin to feel resentful or lose ourselves in the process.

I do believe Therapy works best when the decision and commitment have been made to begin a new journey - and when I was ready to begin that journey - I embraced supportive and uplifting individuals around me, spent many hours reading the experiences that other individuals had and applied some of those beliefs and techniques that I felt were best for my own growth.
