My Approach to Helping

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who received a doctoral degree from The University of Iowa and have worked for over 30 years helping individuals, couples, and families become more intentional and response-able in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

I began my career in Eastern Iowa, doing in-home therapy throughout a four-county area with families who had complex, interacting struggles such as very limited income in blended families, with opposing parenting styles, who were dealing with teen substance abuse. My most recent career chapter included 8 years with the Air National Guard, instituting a new program that focused on reducing suicide risk, increasing resilience, and minimizing stigma when utilizing programs to maximize mental wellness. Evidence-based approaches, such as Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are utilized to ensure that clients experience ongoing and increasing levels of progress toward their goals. These methods can be applied to a variety of issues like mood management, stress reduction, impulsive behaviors, and modification of relationship conflict patterns.

More Info About My Practice

My favorite word, with all of its variations, is CHOICE. My least favorite word is NORMAL, regarding people, not the town in Illinois. I view each individual as unique and deserving of care and respect, not as a diagnostic label in need of correction. It is the difference between, “You are depressed. Here is what you need to do to change,” versus, “You are a person who often seems to struggle with feelings of depression. Let’s explore the conditions that make those feelings hit really hard, compared to times when they seem to lighten up.” Because the best outcomes are achieved when there is a good therapistclient fit, I welcome feedback at the end of each session, to review whether anything has been particularly helpful or unhelpful, so methods can be adapted to achieve the best results.
