My Approach to Helping
Javier is a licensed mental health counselor, having obtained his master\'s degree from Pace University. He is currently going for his PhD in mental health counseling at the same institution. He is also nationally certified in counseling. Javier has worked with a wide range of clients including children, adolescents/young adults, couples, and older individuals. His experience includes working both in in-patient hospital settings as well as outpatient mental health clinics. He has worked primarily with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, substance abuse issues, relationship conflicts, sexuality and gender-related issues, and ADHD.
While Javier considers himself primarily a person-centered and cognitive-behavioral therapist, he does utilize techniques from other modalities as well including DBT, mindfulness, Gestalt therapy, and motivational interviewing. His therapy involves actively listening to clients\' needs and concerns while engaging them in whichever therapeutic intervention may best be suitable for them in a welcoming and safe space.
While having been born in NYC, Javier\'s family is from Ecuador. He is bilingual in Spanish and English, offering therapeutic services in both languages. He can also engage in conversational French. He identifies with the LGBTQ community and tries to actively participate in advocacy efforts for both the Latino and LGBTQ populations.
