Mental Health Statistics for Charlotte

Charlotte is the 17-most populated U.S. city. According to a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) survey for 2002-2004, 10.1% of adult residents in western North Carolina, including Mecklenburg County, experienced severe psychological distress in the previous year. Of all area residents, 8.8% had used illicit drugs within a 30-day period between 2002 and 2004, 4.87% used pain relievers for nonmedical purposes, and nearly 2% reported having substance use problem.

In 2011, 19% of high school students reported having been bullied on school property, and 15% claimed to have attempted suicide one or more times within the year. The North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services reported that 11,629 children and 12,794 adults were served by MeckLINK Behavioral Healthcare programs in the second quarter of 2012. Of all area residents receiving care from MeckLINK, 4% were admitted for short-term, psychiatric inpatient care.
