Mental Health in Anchorage
Substance use among youths in Anchorage is a concern. Almost 14% of youths have used or observed the use of harmful substances such as chemical solvents. Anchorage youth also have higher rates of marijuana use than the national average. Mental health experts have outlined several protective factors against substance use. These include access to trusted adults, extracurricular activities, volunteer programs, and faith-based programs.
From 2010 to 2012, Anchorage residents ages 18-25 had a higher prevalence of major depression than young adults nationwide. They were also more likely to have mental health concerns in general. Over 13% of residents under the age of 65 do not have health insurance.
