Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for traumatized children and adolescents and their parents or primary caregivers. TF-CBT has proven results for resolving trauma-related difficulties in children and adolescents.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Judith Cohen, a co-developer of TF-CBT, will describe the complex ways trauma can impact children’s functioning and the core principles of TF-CBT treatment. These core principles include:

Dr. Cohen will also provide a basic introduction to the TF-CBT components summarized by the acronym PRACTICE: psychoeducation and parenting skills, relaxation skills, affective modulation skills, cognitive processing skills, trauma narration and processing, in vivo mastery, conjoint child-parent sessions, and enhancing safety and future developmental trajectory.

Dr. Cohen will discuss the research supporting the Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy model which has been documented in more than 20 randomized controlled trials for children ages 3-18 years old in the United States, Europe, Africa, and Australia. Traumas the children experienced included sexual abuse, commercial sexual exploitation, domestic violence, terrorism, war, multiple/mixed traumas, and complex trauma. Dr. Cohen will explain research outcomes that have indicated the superiority of TF-CBT over other treatment conditions in improving children’s posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, behavioral, cognitive, and social competence symptoms as well as improving parental symptoms.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe five domains of children’s functioning that may be impacted by trauma.

  2. Describe three core Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy principles.

  3. Describe the TF-CBT practice components.

  4. Summarize the evidence base supporting the efficacy of TF-CBT for traumatized children.

  5. Describe four steps required for obtaining TF-CBT National Therapist Certification.
