While the client is the heart of therapeutic change, the relationship between the provider and client is the soul of therapeutic change. Therapists explore many pathways to improve the therapeutic alliance, but what really works?

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Barry Duncan will address the following three strategies to improve the therapeutic alliance:

  1. Rallying consumer resources to the cause of change.

  2. Giving the alliance the attention that research suggests it deserves.

  3. Using systematic client feedback about the benefit of services and the quality of the alliance to involve consumers in all decisions that affect their care.

Dr. Duncan will also discuss the Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS). PCOMS provides an early warning system that identifies people who are not responding to therapy, allowing clinicians to keep clients engaged while collaboratively seeking new directions. Because of the research conducted by Dr. Duncan and colleagues, PCOMS is included in the U.S. National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. PCOMS has been implemented across the U.S., Canada, and 20 other countries.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. List the factors that contribute to change in psychotherapy.

  2. Describe the specific strategies used by providers to improve outcomes by spending more time on resource activation.

  3. Describe the specific strategies used by providers to improve outcomes by forming better alliances.

  4. Demonstrate how to use a simple early warning system for early identification of clients who are not dramatically improving and increase effectiveness.

  5. Explain how eliciting client feedback about the alliance and outcome enables new directions in treatment and brings clients back in who would have otherwise not benefited.
