A diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) can be stressful for any individual and may motivate a person to enter therapy. Both of these conditions can require extensive mental health care in addition to medical treatment. It is essential for mental health professionals to understand the multifaceted issues facing people diagnosed with HIV and/or AIDS and utilize effective treatment strategies.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Juliana Deans PhD, LPC, LMHC, NCC will discuss solution-oriented approaches therapists can use with individuals diagnosed with HIV and/or AIDS. Dr. Deans will explore Bill O’Hanlon’s ideas of solution-oriented therapy. These include addressing a person’s potential to change, helping them express their feelings, and teaching them to cope with adversity in a positive manner.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Identify clinical biases when working with people diagnosed with HIV and/or the AIDS virus.

  2. Discuss trends of mental health and medical issues for people with HIV and/or the AIDS virus.

  3. Recognize the need for case management services while treating clients with HIV and/or the AIDS virus.

  4. Discuss the impact of cultural identities while assessing clients with HIV and/or the AIDS virus.

  5. Summarize the theoretical approaches and interventions of solution-oriented therapy while working with clients diagnosed with HIV and or/the AIDS virus.
