There are possible risk issues in private practice, even before a client comes in for their first appointment. There are simple practices mental health professionals can use for everything from file keeping to paperwork to work effectively with their clients while decreasing potential risks in private practice.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Amy L. Hooper, LCSW-C, CEAP will discuss steps clinicians can take to maintain or improve HIPAA compliance and confidentiality. Amy will identify several areas where many clinicians may not realize they are not maintaining HIPAA compliance.

Amy will explore risks associated with electronic communication, encryption, and phone use and explain how these risks can be minimized. Amy will discuss how to comply with the HIPAA Security Rule, what a Risk Assessment Plan is, and why it is needed in private practice. She will also highlight professional risks and the effective use of consultation while seeing clients in private practice.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recognize the importance of risk management in private practice.

  2. Create a risk management plan for one's therapy practice.

  3. Apply a risk management plan to increase the security of one's practice.

  4. Summarize the many different areas where HIPAA compliance is crucial in a private practice, including electronics, office space, and paperwork.

  5. Explain how risk management can prevent common pitfalls of maintaining a private practice.
