Telemental health is coming into its own in the counseling industry, and more people than ever are aware of the possibilities telehealth presents for improving access to mental healthcare. Many employee assistance programs (EAPs), employer health plans, and private insurers are running telemental health programs to reach underserved populations and lower the costs of effective care delivery. Clinicians can use telemental health to deliver most of their chosen modalities—if they are proficient in its proper use.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Roy Huggins, LPC, NCC and Rob Reinhardt, LPCS, NCC will review basic legal-ethical, technical, and clinical skills to build telemental health competence. Research shows telemental health is effective. Professional ethics codes and guidelines make a point of noting that competency in telemental health is a prerequisite to performing it. This training is designed to be accessible to all—being "tech-savvy" is not required.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. List the specific relevant ethical and legal standards they must follow to begin performing professional telemental health services.

  2. Describe the areas of telemental health competence that are least understood, according to research.

  3. Summarize the competencies clinicians need to develop for beginning telemental health practice and develop strategies for attaining those competencies.

  4. Describe the basic principles of using videoconferencing software to effectively deliver services.

  5. Assess telemental health delivery companies for legal-ethical and clinical appropriateness.
