Partner violence is a serious, preventable public health concern affecting millions of Americans. According to the Bureau of Justice, intimate partner violence accounted for 30% of female homicides and 5% of male homicides between 2001 and 2005. In addition, data shows a strong correlation between partner abuse and child maltreatment. Researchers indicate that counseling was helpful for most victims.

In this conference, Dr. Ratliff will review the impact of partner violence on adults and children and examine the link between partner violence and child maltreatment. In addition, she will offer suggestions for treatment and counseling recommendations.

This web conference is beginning instructional level and designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recognize forms of partner violence.

  2. Select and make use of appropriate treatment modalities for treating victims and perpetrators of partner violence.

  3. List at least three forms of partner violence.

  4. Identify at least three risk factors for perpetration of partner violence.

  5. Recognize at least two characteristics of women and two characteristics of men more likely to experience partner violence.

  6. Describe at least three health outcomes for women who are victims of violence.

Very knowledgeable and experienced. It was also helpful to have a cultural perspective and how culture, background and belief systems can play a role and how to handle that sensitively. - Chloe Lankshear, MEd & EdS
