Anxiety conditions are among the most common and treatable psychological concerns presented in therapy. Research indicates cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a cost-effective and highly successful approach for the treatment of intermittent and chronic anxiety conditions. During this continuing education web conference, Dr. Barmann will discuss how he uses CBT to create a “strategic philosophy” for working with anxiety and obsessive compulsive behaviors informed by the latest research.

During this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Barmann will explain the factor most responsible for triggering the worry cycle as well as outline strategies for helping individuals reframe distorted thoughts and overcome self-defeating behaviors to more easily manage their anxiety. In addition, he will share clinical examples of facilitating individuals in therapy to identify personal beliefs that trigger worry and anxiety rather than teaching avoidance techniques.

In an effort to help, clinicians may feel compelled to repeatedly offer reassurance to clients whose anxiety triggers uncertainty. Dr. Barmann will share his techniques for teaching those with anxiety to “think about how they think” and use this meta-cognitive approach to avoid the reassurance trap.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Identify common beliefs that serve to fuel and maintain chronic worry.

  2. Describe the “cognitive formulae” which results in anxious arousal.

  3. Recognize how avoidance strategies become the problem as opposed to the solution.

  4. Explain the use of clinical metaphors in the treatment of anxiety conditions.

  5. Describe how to help anxious clients understand their relationship with anxiety.

  6. Apply the use of current technology and smart phones to enhance treatment gains.
