Feelings of overwhelm are widespread. Like the tentacles of an octopus, these feelings increasingly reach into our lives, affecting us at home, at work, and in our relationships. No one is immune to overwhelm and, when it is not addressed appropriately, it can lead to serious stress-related issues including compassion fatigue and burnout. Clinicians emphasize the importance of self-care to individuals in therapy but taking the time to reduce their own stress often becomes secondary.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Sarri Gilman, LMFT will share information she has learned from studying the research on overwhelm for her latest book, Naming and Taming Overwhelm. Sarri understands, firsthand, how people who work in healthcare and human services are on the frontline of this issue. Her concerns grew from seeing more and more professionals and lay-people who are overwhelmed and struggling to cope.

Sarri has examined widespread overwhelm on a spectrum that looks beyond the individual to see its negative impact in the workplace and on a community. She will move beyond the basic self-care tenets to share fresh ideas and tools that can help therapists care for themselves as they care for others. She will also review new strategies for working with overwhelmed individuals in therapy. Though the experience of overwhelm is often complicated, there are specific steps that can be taken to reduce and recover from its negative impact and prevent it from happening in the future.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recognize the signs of overwhelm.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of how to distinguish overwhelm from trauma.

  3. Explain treatment and care issues for overwhelmed individuals in therapy.

  4. Detail care needs and coping tools for overwhelmed clinicians.

  5. Summarize systemic overwhelm, including leadership skills and strategies for advocacy.
