Contemporary culture teaches girls that their personal worth is based on their appearance and their ability to gain attention. Faced with confusing and contradictory expectations as well as unattainable standards, it is no wonder that girls are experiencing increasingly higher levels of mental health issues. Many parents feel helpless against the onslaught of negative influences targeting their daughters who may struggle to find their authentic sense of self.

During this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Laura Choate will draw upon years of research and counseling literature to teach clinicians how to instill the power of resilience in girls, including developing a positive body image, maintaining healthy relationships with friends and romantic partners while navigating high-pressure academic environments.

Based on cutting-edge research, Dr. Choate will review strategies for counselors that will prepare girls with the life skills they need to resist destructive cultural influences. She will offer counselors skills to provide a therapeutic message of hope and reassurance as she outlines a set of straightforward tools they can use to help their clients navigate the trials and demands of contemporary girlhood.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recognize the three current cultural trends are impacting the mental health of girls.

  2. Create therapeutic exercises for use with parents to help clarify their parenting values and goals.

  3. Assess emerging mental health problems in adolescent girls that may be related to contemporary culture.

  4. Recognize the importance of promoting resilience as a key to preventing negative mental health outcomes for girls.

  5. Utilize skills for teaching girls resilience in five essential life dimensions: developing a positive body image, maintaining healthy relationships, navigating academics, and developing effective problem-solving and coping strategies.

Event Reviews from Members

This workshop provided helpful tools and guidance as a professional counselor, but also as an aunt/future mother.  The subject matter was informative and brought attention to how influential young females are and what we can do as counselors/adults to facilitate and encourage positive growth and development. - Brittany Adcox, MS, LPC

As a clinician and a father of two girls I found this very helpful yet disturbing. The disturbing aspect is good, because I want to know the truth rather than feel good as a result of false information. This information will impact how I work with younger people and with my children as well. - Jeff Wells, LMFT, CADC
