Everything we experience comes to us through our physical bodies—through our sensory systems, our brains, our nervous systems, and our physical actions in the world. Our decisions and actions have a tremendous impact on the well-being and function of our bodies, for better or worse. Loss of function in our physical health, temporary or permanent, is often the source of crisis, whereas our peak experiences involve a sense of deep embodiment. On a day to day basis, feeling grounded and alive serves as the foundation for deep satisfaction and well-being.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Andrea Bell, LCSW will discuss somatic awareness, a tool often overlooked in the therapy room. Clients struggling with mood or associated behaviors often benefit from somatic awareness, as the root of mood disorders can be found in the body’s stress response cycle. Likewise, somatic awareness is often a crucial component for clients working to resolve identity issues, developmental challenges, existential issues, and many other common reasons for contacting a therapist.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe somatic psychotherapy and how it can support therapists’ toolkit and the therapy process.

  2. Explain “the felt sense” in somatic psychotherapy.

  3. Explain “the resonance” in somatic psychotherapy.

  4. Summarize the differences between shock and developmental traumas.

  5. Discuss important precautions regarding somatic psychotherapy.
