More and more transgender-identified people are seeking mental health services. Yet professional training on effective therapeutic strategies to best serve the transgender population is scarce. Even more concerning, few workshops specifically examine the lives of people who are transgender through a systems-based lens. This continuing education event is designed to increase competency among mental health providers who serve the transgender community and its allies.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Matthew Goldenberg will introduce common issues couples face when one or both partners are transitioning genders. He will also review and define key terminology used within the transgender community.

Dr. Goldenberg will highlight ways in which couples therapy modalities can be applied to identify and address specific issues transgender individuals and their partners may face. He will also share a case example illustrating best practices to identify potential sexual and romantic dynamics that are unique to transgender individuals.

All levels of experience are welcome. This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Define key terminology such as transgender and gender binary.

  2. Describe distinctions between issues that affect lesbian, gay, and bisexual communities and those that affect the transgender community.

  3. Discuss a case example to examine key issues couples face when a partner is transitioning.

  4. Assess which couples therapy techniques are most adaptable to the transgender community in a culturally-relevant manner.

  5. Recognize common barriers people who are transgender may face when attempting to access mental health care.
