Couples in therapy often point out their relationship changes after the birth of their children, but many therapists neglect to explore this critical period of a couple’s life together. Although many couples resume their sex life within six months after the birth of a child, some may feel dissatisfied and researchers have only recently begun to address this common issue.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Stephanie Buehler will describe how women often experience changes in their sexuality after pregnancy which may negatively impact their relationships. Women may also complain of feeling neglected by their partner after pregnancy or that their partner is not sharing an equitable amount of the new parenting responsibilities. Dr. Buehler will detail how men are less likely to be sexually dissatisfied if they are happy with other aspects of their relationship, but the fatigue and financial strain that can occur after the birth of a child may cause their experience of their relationship to falter.

In addition, Dr. Buehler will explain how postpartum depression (PPD) is not an exclusively maternal experience. Dr. Buehler will describe how PPD has the potential to affect both partners in terms of intimacy, sexuality, and the overall health and wellness of the relationship. Attendees will learn about common problems that couples face after the birth of a child and how they impact this period as well as how it evolves as their children grow.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe at least three sexual difficulties that couples may experience after the birth of a child.

  2. List at least three factors that may create relationship dissatisfaction after the birth of a child.

  3. Identify the effects of postpartum depression on intimacy and sexuality.

  4. Utilize at least three sex therapy techniques for overcoming sexual problems after pregnancy.

  5. Utilize at least three couples therapy techniques for overcoming problems with relationship intimacy after pregnancy.
