Clinicians who treat people diagnosed with eating disorders, substance abuse, and other co-occurring conditions face unique challenges. To be effective in these cases, clinicians may need to utilize a combination of therapeutic approaches.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference for mental health professionals, Greg Holich, MS, LPC will explain how incorporating the principles and skills from both Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can enhance therapeutic interventions for co-occurring conditions.

Greg will highlight how clinicians can approach dialectical dilemmas when helping an individual experiencing co-occurring disorders through the ACT model of psychological flexibility. He will include a didactic presentation of skills and concepts in addition to practical interventions clinicians can implement into their practice.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Compare the practice of mindfulness from both an ACT and DBT perspective.

  2. Discuss the four modalities of DBT in the treatment of co-occurring disorders.

  3. Utilize practical therapeutic interventions to address each of the six core skill areas of the ACT model of psychological flexibility.

  4. Analyze the underpinnings of dialectical dilemmas, including elements of the biosocial theory, to navigate the ACT model of psychological flexibility.

  5. Describe the function of language as an influential factor in human achievement and misery.
