Mental health providers are at risk for burnout and compassion fatigue. The basic characteristic of counseling entails providing empathy and compassion to clients. Although these qualities are needed for this profession, they also can establish the groundwork for burnout and/or compassion fatigue to grow. Well-meaning mental health professionals may not be aware that this is happening. Far too many providers may succumb to the demands of their profession and may unwittingly suffer from burnout and/or compassion fatigue.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Valerie Kuykendall-Rogers will reveal how clinicians can become more aware of their own symptoms that could derail their longevity and effectiveness in their careers. Valerie will begin by discussing the history and origins of both burnout and compassion fatigue as well as identifying the similarities and differences between the two.

Additionally, Valerie will outline the different phases that are associated with both burnout and compassion fatigue. She will also explain "Dos and Don’ts" that are unique to mental health providers, as well as provide tools and resources to remain effective and resilient in providing mental health services to clients.

Valerie will also outline how to diagnose, prevent, and treat compassion fatigue and burnout in clients in therapy.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Summarize the history, origins, and definition of burnout and compassion fatigue.

  2. Compare and contrast the characteristics of burnout and compassion fatigue.

  3. Recognize the common signs and symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue.

  4. List the different stages of burnout and compassion fatigue.

  5. Utilize tools to diagnose and assess if one has compassion fatigue or burnout.

  6. Compile intervention, treatment, and strategies to manage burnout and compassion fatigue.
